From Cowtown to the Boardroom: How Rural Roots Shaped My Approach to Modern Etiquette

Margaret Page

Growing up in Cowtown, Alberta, as the child of Dutch immigrants, I was deeply rooted in a lifestyle far removed from the polished halls of the corporate world. My upbringing was steeped in the traditions of rural life—knowing exactly what to wear to a rodeo, how to break in a pair of cowboy boots, and the proper way to wear a Stetson. From flipping flapjacks and making jam to milking goats and foaling out mares, my childhood was a hands-on education in resilience, resourcefulness, and respect for hard work. These early lessons would become the foundation of my unique approach to modern etiquette, bridging the gap between authenticity and sophistication.

Life Lessons from the Farm

On the farm, every day presented a new challenge, whether it was learning how to herd buffalo (or rather, how not to) or ensuring that monogrammed napkins stayed far away from the combine crew. The farm taught me that authenticity is about being true to yourself, even when it means getting your hands dirty. It instilled in me a deep respect for the value of hard work and the importance of community—a lesson I carry with me into every boardroom I step into.

Bridging Two Worlds

As I transitioned from rural life to becoming a certified etiquette expert, I found myself navigating two very different worlds. The contrast between the straightforward, no-nonsense approach of farm life and the nuanced, sophisticated world of modern etiquette was stark. Yet, it was within this contrast that I found my unique perspective. Authenticity, I realized, is just as important in the boardroom as it is on the farm. Whether you’re shaking hands at a networking event or tipping your hat at a rodeo, the ability to be genuine and true to yourself is what leaves a lasting impression.

From Rodeos to Boardrooms

My journey from the rodeos of Alberta to the boardrooms of today’s corporate world has given me a fresh perspective on etiquette. It’s not just about knowing which fork to use or how to introduce yourself; it’s about understanding the cultural and social contexts that shape our interactions. By blending the authenticity of my rural upbringing with the sophistication required in professional settings, I’ve developed an approach to etiquette that is both practical and empowering.

Empowering Others Through Etiquette

Today, I leverage my unique background and formal training to help individuals and organizations navigate the complexities of modern etiquette and civility. Drawing on my experiences from the farm to the boardroom, I teach others how to seamlessly blend authenticity with sophistication. Whether it’s mastering networking, refining body language, or enhancing cultural intelligence, I am dedicated to making a positive impact on my clients' personal and professional lives.

In a world where the lines between personal and professional life are increasingly blurred, staying true to one’s roots while embracing growth and sophistication is more important than ever. My journey from rural Alberta to the realm of modern etiquette has taught me that authenticity is the key to navigating these complexities with grace and confidence.

I encourage you to draw on your own background, whatever it may be, to find the balance that allows you to thrive in both worlds.
